Beautiful, well-preserved walls from a bygone era

This city gate was built in the thirteenth century to connect the city with the port area along the Marecchia river. It was part of the defensive walls due to the expansion of the city in the Frederick era (13th century). It replaced another gate moved slightly further into the city.

In the 15th century it was restored by the lord of Rimini, Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta (1417-1468): this can be deduced from the fact that at the beginning of the 20th century in some excavations a deposit of Malatesta medals used by Sigismondo himself to indicate his works was found built or renovated. From the bas-relief by Agostino di Duccio (dating between 1449 and 1455) preserved in the chapel of the zodiac signs in the Malatesta Temple, we can guess what the door looked like in the fifteenth century. It is no coincidence that the sculptor represents it in the foreground: it was in fact a Sigismondean work.

In the 16th century the door was closed and replaced with a tower which in the 18th century was called the "Knights' Tower".

Recent archaeological investigations have shown that a modern sewer pipe (16th-17th century) passes through the center of the arch.
