The original building, which was already named after Saint Margaret, was first mentioned in 1275. This must have been a building in the Romanesque style. The patronage of the church was held by the ruling nobility, the Lords of Schellenberg zu Kißlegg. The church was therefore closely linked to the church of St. Katherina in Kißlegg. This bond lasted until 1808. Five years later it was merged with the Kilianskaplanei in Leutkirch im Allgäu.

The building was built in the late Gothic style and the church acquired some Neo-Gothic features in the second half of the 19th century. The chapel near the choir in particular is in this style. Inside there is a baroque altar and a baroque ceiling painting in the nave. A painting can also be discovered in the apse. The paintings are more reminiscent of the Baroque period, but the figures in the religious scene lack the typical fullness. In the Baroque period, the ideal of beauty was somewhat corpulent. These figures are more evidence of historicism because they are slim and muscular.

There is also a Lourdes grotto, accessible from the outside, with a Madonna inside. A reminder of the apparition of Mary in the French city of Lourdes. There are around 200 such Lourd grottos in Germany, primarily in Catholic areas (source: oberschwaben-tipps.de/st-margareta-willerazhofen/).
