The Scottish Houses in Veere tell the success story of the cities and commercial trade in Zeeland in the late Middle Ages. The Walcheren roadstead was the center of Zeeland trade and shipping around the middle of the sixteenth century.

Veere established special trade relations with Scotland.

Scottish wool nations (trading companies) existed in Veere as early as the early fifteenth century. In 1541, Veere became the warehouse for Scottish goods, with wool as by far the most important product. Wool was very popular in the Flemish cloth industry. Possession of the Scottish staple meant that woolen and linen fabrics, salmon, butter, leather and hides from Scotland could only be sold in Veere. Factors based in Veere sold the goods on behalf of Scottish merchants.

The Scottish Houses are now part of Museum Veere. The museum displays original objects and documents in the Scottish Houses that recall the centuries-long trade relations between Veere and Scotland.

In the 16th century, Veere became a trading point for Scottish goods. Wool was an important export product. The Scottish houses "Lammeken" and "In de Struijs" are reminders of the trade relations with Scotland. The houses owe their names to the figures on the gable stones: a lamb and an ostrich. Behind the characteristic facades of the Scottish houses is now the Veere Museum.
