Veere Town Hall

In the historic center of Veere there are still many houses, streets and buildings that date from the 15th and 16th centuries. The old Town Hall on the Markt is a historic building and you will also find the tourist information point there.

A settlement with a mill, harbor dike and individual houses in today's local area is mentioned for the first time at the end of the 13th century. Even then there seemed to have been a ferry to Kamperland. Veere experienced its first heyday from the 15th century, above all through the cloth trade. In the period that followed, it was business relations with Great Britain that ensured wealth in the city. In the 16th and 17th centuries Veere was one of the most powerful cities in the Netherlands. With Napoleon, and the associated ban on trade with England and Scotland, the decline came. Until the Veersedamm was built, it was fishing that fed the people of Veere. But that was the end of the separation to the sea in 1963. Today Veere is a popular tourist destination, without its own oversized accommodation complexes.

At the end of the nineteenth century, the church was saved from demolition by Victor de Stuers, who designated the building the very first national monument in the Netherlands. Today, the Grote Kerk Veere is owned by the Monuments Property Foundation, which is part of the National Monuments Organisation. The Grote Kerk Veere now houses a unique experience and offers plenty of space for art, culture and new encounters.
