The hike to the cave
starts on the road from Vathy to Marathia, shortly before the Anemodouri area.

marked with blue signs or white-blue markings) leads uphill from the road. The ascent is steep, but short and takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
Name: "Rizes" means "roots" in Greek. The name comes from the impressive roots of an old fig tree that grow through an opening in the ceiling into the interior of the cave.
Researchers suspect that this
is the Homeric cave of Eumaeus – the faithful swineherd of Odysseus from the Odyssey.

The trail has not been maintained for some time. We couldn't find the path in the middle of the brambles and had to turn back!!
