The Carmelite Monastery, in full Carmel Maria Middelares, was a Carmelite monastery on King Albert I Square in Leopoldsburg, which existed from 1924-2012.
The core of the monastery is the chapel. This is a neoclassical former parish church that was built outside the military domain in 1843. With the opening of the larger Our Lady of the Assumption Church in 1906, the predecessor became vacant and was used as a warehouse. In 1924, the building regained a religious function as a chapel, when a Carmelite monastery was founded through the actions of Edward Poppe. In 1922, this priest had already become the spiritual leader of the religious who had to perform their military service in Leopoldsburg (called the Cibists). In 1956 the chapel was enriched with a Stations of the Cross by Victor Van Meerbeeck.
The Carmelites also formed a lay order.
In March 2012 it was announced that the monastery was closing. The last remaining five elderly sisters moved to convents in Vilvoorde or Vlamertinge, or to a retirement home. The chapel was preserved, but the large monastery building was sold.
