In the 14th century, the Wallen van Sluis (Sluis Walls) were built as fortifications to protect the then important trading town of Sluis. The Spanish conquered the town in 1587, and in 1604, it was recaptured by the troops of Prince Maurits. The Stenen Beer (Stenen Beer), the Waterpoort (Water Gate), the Zuidpoort (South Gate), and the Oostpoort (East Gate) are the four remaining city gates that are part of the fortifications.

Tip: The Sluis city walls are a wonderful place for a walk: surrounded by water and nestled in greenery, they are the perfect place to take a breather. Information panels along the path provide information about the history of the city walls and gates. The route is approximately 4 km long.

The "East Gate" of the medieval town of Sluis, southeast of Cadzand-Bad, is the eastern city gate from the time of the "Spanish State Line." Built between 1425 and 1432, the Sluis "East Gate" is located near the "Zuiddijk" (Southern Dike) of Sluis and has four large gates—two on the city side and two on the outside of the fortifications. At that time, access to the city was possible via two drawbridges: The movable bridges, which could be raised using a mechanical device, led over two moats protecting the fortress of Sluis.
