At the northern end of Piazza Roncas is this mill wheel, powered by the water of the Ru de Ville. Behind it you can see the long row of washhouses where laundry was washed and rinsed until the second half of the 20th century.

There are essentially two drive variants for water mills:
* Either the flowing water simply hits the blades of the water wheel from below to set it in motion; or
* The water flow is guided above the wheel - usually through a so-called "mill channel" - and falls onto the blades. This design ensures greater efficiency due to natural gravity.
