The Kerngrund fore-dam is one of two fore-dams on the Ohratalsperre, where the Kernwasser stream is dammed.

          Description

The reservoir is mainly used to produce drinking water and supplies over 400,000 residents in central Thuringia. The reservoir volume is around 18 million m³. The dam has retained a natural character. During the construction of the dam, 20 houses, a sawmill and the former boiler forge in the Schwarzwald district were demolished and the road was relocated to Oberhof. The "Untere Schweizerhütte" restaurant had to close due to its location in the dam's water catchment area; it was also demolished.

            Structures and ancillary facilities

The dam is a straight rockfill dam with an asphalt concrete outer seal. A general overhaul of the dam and the intake structure was carried out up until 2000.

The water treatment plant is located directly below the dam. In addition to producing drinking water, electricity is also generated. The hydroelectric power station has an output of 400 kW. The flood relief is a round overflow shaft to the side of the dam. The dam has two fore-dams called Kerngrund and Silbergrund for preliminary cleaning. These dams are 14.5 and 12 m high respectively.

The inflow to the dam is secured by transfer tunnels from the Zahmen Gera and the Schmalwasser.

Beautiful part of the Ohratalsperre. The often different water levels in summer and winter are interesting.
