Due to the constant increase in the population, open markets were no longer appropriate. So it was decided to create a covered trading opportunity on the site of the former city wall and the filled-in city moat. The market hall was built in 1890 on a site of 5,380 m² that belonged to the city between Chemnitz River and Hedwigstrasse. It was opened in 1891 and cost 536,000 marks at the time. 4,500 m² of this is covered retail space.
