The Nieuwstraat may be a special street, but certainly not designed for cyclists on the German side. Posts on the cycle path, cycle path combined with parking spaces, roundabouts where motorists do not give cyclists space. No, I certainly would not call it a cycling highlight.

The Neustrasse in Herzogenrath and Nieuwstraat in Kerkrade divide the cities that have grown together for over 800 years and at the same time form the state border between Germany and the Netherlands. Until the liberalization of border traffic, it was a center for Dutch-German border smuggling. Only after decades of protests by the population was a border barrier in the middle of the street abandoned.
