The Danube gorge “Weltenburger Enge” is a unique natural spectacle.

150 million years ago, a shallow, subtropical sea covered the Kelheim area. Corals and sponges built mighty reefs out of limestone - today's rock faces of the Weltenburger Enge. Around 200,000 years ago, a tributary of the ancient Danube dug through the limestone and created today's Danube riverbed. Over a stretch of around five kilometers, the river flows between the limestone rock walls that rise up to 70 meters: an impressive sight that is best enjoyed from a ship.

A nice excursion is the boat trip from Kelheim through the Danube Gorge to Weltenburg Monastery. Stop there and return by ship to Kelheim.
