The Roman or Salt Tower was once one of the intermediate towers on the west side of the fort, which was built as a horseshoe tower in the first half of the 4th century AD as part of the massive reinforcement of the fortifications of the fort.

When the fort area was repopulated in the Carolingian period, the tower was integrated into the city wall and used as a protective structure and to secure the ship's docks until the 13th century. In the 15th century it served as an armory for storing powder and weapons and in the early 19th century as a salt warehouse. That's why the population now calls it the salt tower (source: roemer-tour.de/roemerwegen/oesterreich/tulln-comagenis/roemer-salzturm-tulln/).

There is an interesting museum in the Roman tower (salt tower), which is original from the Roman era right down to the roof.

The Roman tower, which was used for various purposes over the centuries, is now the only tower that has almost completely preserved the western fort wall.

Probably the best persevered building from the Roman times in Austria. Originally built in 4th century, this tower has been part of the city walls for centuries until finally remaining as a stand alone building.
