A hammer and some kind of chisel - or simply: mallet and iron. These were once the most important tools in mining. So it's no wonder that they were used as miners' coats of arms as early as the 16th century. They were also one of the most frequently used symbols in the mining industry. The same applies to the Schlagel and Eisen colliery in Herten: Here too, you can still see the famous sign in many places. And this is mainly because many of the complex's buildings have been preserved. Those that were economically usable were privatized, while the headframes and the machine house were transferred to the property of the Industrial Monuments Foundation and thus saved from demolition.
