Sémeries is located in the southeast of the Nord (Hainaut) department in the heart of the Avesnois Regional Natural Park. The Avesnois is known for its meadows, its hedgerow landscape and its slightly hilly relief in the southeast (beginning of the foothills of the Ardennes), which is called “little Switzerland of the North”. In fact, Sémeries is administratively part of the Avesnois, geologically of the Ardennes, historically of Hainaut and its landscapes are reminiscent of Thiérache.
The village is crossed by a river, the Helpe Majeure. The latter flows into the Sambre. Despite the construction upstream of the Val Joly dam by EDF in 1967, it is still possible to see the Helpe Majeure temporarily rise from its bed, even though floods have become much rarer and less important compared to the past.
