At De Baggerputten just outside Slochteren you can take a nice walk around the 'baggerput'. In the 17th century, dredged peat was extracted from this very wet peat area of the Slochterveld. The peat was dredged from the water and dried in a large form on embankments.

The Baggerputten is now a small-scale nature reserve with forest, reed collars, peat ponds, meadows and shrubs. Walking and cycling paths run through the area and the water also serves as a fishing pond.
