The town hall is the largest and most representative half-timbered building in Ummerstadt. The decorative framework was hidden under plaster until 1929, only since then has the almost 450-year-old building once again presented itself with a half-timbered façade - thus shaping the view of the market square at the front of which it stands.

The year 1558 is carved into the western corner of the foundation walls of the town hall: the year the town hall was built - or so it is assumed.

During the Thirty Years' War, exactly on October 14, 1632, the town hall, like most of the city's buildings, burned down almost completely. Imperial and Bavarian troops were the arsonists. After the major fire, the bar service in the lower rooms could only be maintained in a makeshift manner. The town hall bell remained intact and, after a short interlude in the town church, now rings again in the town hall tower. It is the oldest bell in Ummerstadt.

At the end of 1682, the local council decided to build a new town hall on the foundation of the burned down town hall. To the right and left of the staircase, two guild signs from 1727 still bear witness to the high level of craftsmanship. In 1793 a major repair was necessary: on this occasion the guild signs from 1715 and 1727 were renewed.

In 1859, the Hildburghausen master craftsman Friedrich covered the west and weather side of the town hall with slate. In 1929 work began on removing the plaster from the town hall - like most of Ummerstadt's buildings - and removing the old timberwork; This era, in which half-timbering was “in” again, had a very positive effect on the reputation of the town; It is also called “Thuringian Rothenburg” in view of the many artistic half-timbered facades.

Today - as in old times - the city administration and a restaurant can be found in the town hall.

The old town hall in half-timbered style houses both the city administration and a restaurant and is located directly on the market square.
