Newgrange (Irish: Sí an Bhrú) is the name of a large Neolithic grave in County Meath, Ireland, on the River Boyne. It is a passage tomb with a cross-shaped chamber and corbel vault, which is not common, but also occurs in Knowth, Anglesey and Orkney. It is an Irish National Monument.

The name "Newgrange" comes from the fact that the area became part of the lands of Mellifont Abbey in 1142. This is how the name "new grange" ("new farmstead") came about. In Irish, the area is known as Brú na Bóinne [ˈbruː nə ˈboːnʲə] "inn/dwelling on the (river) Boyne" or originally probably "dwelling of the (goddess) Bóinn".

Newgrange is located above a wide bend in the river in one of the most fertile and therefore intensively agriculturally used areas of Ireland. The complex was built around 3150 BC. It is one of the most important megalithic structures in the world. In the immediate vicinity are two other important megalithic structures, Dowth and Knowth, which appear to be chronological predecessors. In 1993, the Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth structures were declared World Heritage Sites.

I was in Newgrange and Knowth in 1994. Back then, I could drive to Newgrange, park my bike right at the entrance to the complex and buy a ticket in a small house for a small amount of money - very easy.

By 2017, that was no longer possible - just drive there.

There was a visitor center, located south of Newgrange - with a lot of entrance fees and bus transfers to Newgrange and Knowth.

It is possible to book just Newgrange or just Knowth - or both together.

Everything was planned out - small groups and a tour every half hour...

I got a sticker on my jacket - it told me when it was my turn and which bus I had to get on...

Arriving in Newgrange - then the same thing - small groups - clearly organized who was next when...

The bus transfer to Knowth too - my group was given 10 minutes to walk around the site on their own - the bus then drove on.

Knowth has turned out great - the whole thing has been beautifully restored!

In 1994 Knowth was still a construction site - there was nothing to see.

Here too, unfortunately, there was only a short time to walk around on my own - the bus was already ready for the return trip to the visitor center...

But it was nice! I'll definitely come back!
