The manor house (Schlössli) built in 1792 from the former estate can still be seen today as the former alpine dairy of Burg Pfeffingen. Today's main building was built in 1899 as a neo-baroque mansion.
In 1941 the magnificent castle estate came into the possession of the city of Basel.
In 1942 the castle estate was set up and run as a school for children in need of relaxation in the city of Basel.
In 1951 the school was extended to become a dormitory.
In 1960 there was a change from a convalescent home to a reformatory.
In 1971, the castle estate was included in the list of protected monuments in the canton of Basel-Landschaft and has been a listed building ever since.
In 1990, the forest school was expanded into a school home with year-round care.
