Here we are in the most historic place in the city: the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi (called the Mother Church) is the oldest religious building in Cerignola.

The Church, since its construction, was dedicated to San. Pietro until 1934, the year in which it passed to the Tonti Cathedral and in which it was dedicated to San. Francis of Assisi. Its construction may date back to the 11th-12th century, as evidenced by the inscription located at the entrance, which concerns the burial of Goffridus, son of Lupos Militis. Further evidence of the antiquity of the structure is provided both by the architecture and by the numerous gravestones dedicated to the various Archpriests Nullius. The expansion works date back to 1819, and since then the Church has not undergone any particular changes.
