The rock church rises high above the houses of Oberstein, built into a natural rock niche.
Wyrich IV of Daun-Oberstein had it built between 1482 and 1484. Behind her the rock face rises steeply, below her the houses of Oberstein nestle on the slope. Thanks to its exposed location, the church has become the city's landmark. The church can only be reached through an inner tunnel (1980-1981) carved into the rock.
