The legend of the Wendelinus Chapel in Niederbach

According to an old chronicle, the St. Wendel chapel was built around 1740. The mountain meadow near the Niederbacher Chapel was very swampy at that time. Once the farmer from the “Musenhof” came through with his team of oxen and a wagon full of hay. Suddenly the two oxen and the hay wagon sank. The farmer desperately called upon heaven and vowed to build a chapel if the oxen were saved. When everything went well, the farmer was in no hurry to start building. Some time later, while plowing near the scene of the accident, he heard voices of prayer. Then he remembered his promise. He unharnessed the oxen and immediately began building the chapel. According to another tradition, an epidemic once killed almost all of the Niederbach farmers' livestock. Then they asked St. Wendelin for help. They vowed to build a chapel in his honor if the plague ended and the remaining livestock were spared.
