Since the island is located directly in front of Dubrovnik and is very easy to reach, we did not miss a visit. The free running rabbits and peacocks make the whole thing entertaining. And as a GoT fan there is one or another place that seems familiar to you.

There are several bars and small restaurants, old buildings and parks.

    Highly recommended.

The uninhabited island is primarily a popular destination for tourists and has its origins in 1023 when the Benedictine monks founded an abbey.

Legend has it that Richard the Lionheart came here in 1192 after a shipwreck to safety when he was on the way home from a crusade in Palestine. He promised that if he was saved, he would build a church. He kept his promise in part by donating, at the request of the inhabitants, funds for the continuation of the construction of the Cathedral of Dubrovnik.

However, it was completely destroyed by the earthquake in 1667 and the Archduke Maximilian von Habsburg erected a castle on the same site, renovated the cloister and had a park built.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the French also built Fort Royal, which offers a breathtaking view of Dubrovnik. In 1959, a botanical garden was also built with a variety of Australian and American plant and cactus species.

In addition to beautiful beaches in the south of the island there is the salt lake "Mrtvo More" (Dead Sea).

Nice park on the island. Well maintained and with many free-roaming animals
