For Elmshorn, the most severe flood disaster of the century occurred in February 1962. The flood peaked at 3 a.m. (5.08 m above sea level). The dike on the Sandberg could not withstand the water masses. Two-thirds of downtown were flooded. All supplies collapsed. Some high water marks in the city center are reminiscent of the water level of this storm surge, which caused damage amounting to DM 30 million.
