The first mention in written sources of a church in this place comes from 1209[2]. It was a wooden church erected during the reign of the Dukes of Gdańsk[3][4]. In the years 1550–1603 it was in the hands of Protestants. The brick church was founded by the starost of Wejherowo, Jakub Wejher[2]. It was built in the years 1644–1647[2]. At the beginning of the 18th century, a tower was added to the body of the church[2]. In the years 1926-1927, the temple was subjected to another, thorough expansion according to plans drawn up by Fenner, a master builder from Człuchów[2]. A new nave was added perpendicularly to the existing church so that the former nave became a transept of the new layout. In this way, the axis of the church, originally oriented, was on the north-south line. At the same time, the walls of the church were raised by 4 meters, and the tower from 25 meters to 38.5 meters in height[3]. In 1926, two stained glass windows by Theo Landmann were created for the temple, depicting the Baptism of Christ in Jordan[5] and Christ the King[6].

As a result of the reconstruction, the church obtained an interesting, unusual shape. The main entrance from the side of Wejhera Street is located in the arcade, covered with a groin vault. Above the entrance there is an inscription Pax Christi in regno Christi (Latin: Peace of Christ in the Kingdom of Christ), and a niche with a figure of St. James the Apostle[2]. The nave consists of three aisles covered with richly decorated wooden ceilings. On the south side, there is a gallery above the porch. The main nave is separated from the transept by a rood arch, marking the boundary between the old part of the church and the part added in 1926. The four-sided tower located on the extension of the transept on the western side was equipped with a clock with a bell from 1522 and an impressive Baroque helmet. The furnishings of the church come from the 17th and 18th centuries[2]. In the presbytery there is a high altar and a Renaissance patron's bench. On both sides of the church, in the transept, there are Baroque side altars from around 1660 depicting St. James the Apostle on the eastern side) and Jesus Crucified (on the western side)[2]. In the former presbytery there is an altar of the Immaculate Virgin Mary from the 17th century[2]. The other equipment includes: a baroque confessional from the 17th century, a baroque pulpit with the figures of the four evangelists and a baptismal font with a massive lid topped with a figure, 2 coffin portraits and liturgical vestments from the 17th and 18th centuries
