At the isthmus of two lakes, refugees who came from the Noteć River built a pre-Slavic wooden stronghold, the trace of which remained on the highest hill near the city. During the times of the Gdańsk dukes, this settlement belonged to the Szczytno castellany, whose seat was located 20 km north-west of today's Człuchów, the no longer existing Szczytno. In 1312, the Teutonic Knights bought Człuchów for a small amount from the sons of Mikołaj of Poniec. At that time, Tuchola, Człuchów and Lębork were promoted to the centers of local authorities. The natural qualities of Człuchów influenced the decision to locate a defensive castle in this part of the Teutonic state, which for centuries was indeed an impregnable fortress.

The main and for a long time the only brick building in Człuchów was the castle. On the outskirts of the borough, a small settlement by the castle was established, inhabited by Kashubians and German colonists. Today it is recognized that it was the nucleus of the city. During each of the numerous wars, the wooden buildings of the city fell victim to flames. The specificity of Człuchów as an administrative and military center influenced the rapid ethnic changes that took place in this area in the 14th century. In the mid-fourteenth century, the Teutonic Knights began colonizing the south-western borders of their country, bringing here settlers from German countries.

Already in September 1939, units of Polish prisoners of war passed through Człuchów and were sent to the famous oflag in Czarne. Soon, forced laborers began arriving here as well.
