Resting place on the right bank at Fort Sint-Filips with a view of the Scheldt where the Bridge of Farnese was located in 1584 and 1585.

    - info from information board -

The bridge of Farnese owes its name to Alexander Farnese, Duke of Parma and governor of the Spanish Netherlands. In 1576, Antwerp signed the Pacification of Ghent and joined the revolt of the Dutch provinces against the Catholic Spanish king Philip II. Antwerp then came under Calvinist rule. General Alexander Farnese was given the task of bringing the rebel areas under control.

In July 1584, Farnese besieged Antwerp. The polders were flooded and he had the forts of Sint-Marie and Sint-Philips built on the banks of the Scheldt. Between them, he set up a blockade of 32 ships chained together - the bridge of Farnese. This blockade was defended on two sides by 33 ships with pointed posts. She made it impossible to supply the city. Antwerp surrendered on August 17, 1585.
