The Medieval Borgo and Rocca are unique in the municipal museums of Turin; they are more reminiscent of an archaeological site than a museum. The complex was designed by a group of Piedmontese artists and intellectuals led by Alfredo D'Andrade. Originally, it was not intended to be a museum, but a hall for the Esposizione Generale Italiana (General Italian Exhibition), held in April 1884 in Turin. The Borgo, a 19th-century refurbishment of a late medieval village with ceramic, printing, iron and wood shutters, was supposed to be demolished after the event ended. However, thanks to the great success of the complex, it was bought by the city of Turin after the end of the event. It was intended only as a "theater setting" for the Rocca, a real castle in which the rooms of a noble residence of the 15th century were recreated: the courtyard, the armory, the kitchen, the dining room, the dungeons, the guard's room The baron's room, the bedroom, the oratory, the bridesmaid's room, the chapel and the shelter. The castle is surrounded by the Giardino del Borgo (Borgogarten), which was built following the gardens of the princes and opened in June 1998.

The Medieval Village was born in 1884 as the Ancient Art Section of the Italian General Exhibition, it reproduces a 15th century feudal village lying naturally on the banks of the Po; the atmosphere that reigns among its houses is simple. The enormous public success achieved by the Borgo meant that it escaped its expected destruction at the end of the Exhibition

The Medieval Village of Turin is an open-air museum along the banks of the Po, currently closed for redevelopment
