    Large heath, small bushes

The Cuxhaven coastal heath is the largest contiguous heathland on the mainland of the German North Sea coast. Directly behind the Geest, a mosaic of extensive heaths, lean grasslands, small heath moors and oak scrub forests stretches close to the coast. Many dwarf shrubs such as crowberry and bell heather grow here.

    The formation of the heath

The large-scale expansion of the heaths only began in the Middle Ages. The high demand for wood for dike and shipbuilding as well as settlement in the wood-poor marshes, "eternal rye cultivation" and the effects of the existing feudal system led to the large-scale desolation of the landscape.

    Heather animals as helpers

Nowadays, grazing animals help to preserve the heaths by pushing back the bush growth:

In the Altenwalder Heide (area of the former military training area), this is done by Heck cattle, wild horses and bison in large paddocks. Other heathland areas are grazed by sheep and goats.

A signposted network of paths with information boards, observation platforms and educational trails leads through the diverse Cuxhaven coastal heath landscape.

The Cuxhaven coastal heaths are located in the districts of Altenwalde, Berensch-Arensch, Duhnen, Holte-Spangen, Oxstedt and Sahlenburg in the city of Cuxhaven in the district of Cuxhaven. They belong to the natural region of Stader Geest and form the transition area from the Geest to the Wadden Sea. (Source: Wikipedia)
