The Old Hungarian script (Hungarian rovásírás, rovás = notch, rune, irás = script), sometimes also referred to as Hungarian runes because of their appearance, was used to write Hungarian in the early Middle Ages before the introduction of the Latin alphabet. It runs from right to left.

The Old Hungarian script is possibly related to the Orkhon runes (Old Turkic script), which, like most European and West Asian alphabets, have their roots in the Phoenician script. There is no relationship to the Germanic runes.

In the early 21st century, the typeface is being used more often again. There are several towns and villages in Hungary which, in addition to the place name sign in Latin script, also have the place names in Old Hungarian script. In modern usage, in contrast to historical usage, there is a distinction between upper and lower case letters (with similar usage rules as in the Latin spelling of the Hungarian language), which differ only in size, not in shape (Wikipedia).
