The church is located at the "entrance" from Bruges. It was built around 1089 on one of the four mounds from which Uitkerke emerged. In 1866 the Gothic church was in a dilapidated state. In 1889 it was decided to build a new, larger church in neo-Gothic style around the existing church, resulting in a mix of styles that are clearly distinguishable inside.
