Between Hijken and Hooghalen you will find Schaapskooi 't Hijkerveld. The Hijkerveld is one of the largest heaths in Drenthe. The area was inhabited by iron farmers in the Iron Age. The remains of this still lie on the heath. Today the area is traditionally used for grazing. The heath is grazed by a herd of Schoonebeker heath sheep. In the summer the herd consists of up to 600 sheep. Almost daily you can enjoy the departure and arrival of the sheep. The shepherd leaves in the morning at 9.30 am and brings the sheep back in around 4.30 pm.
