Seligenstadt a.M. / Hesse 🚴♂️Seligenstadt is a town in the Offenbach district of Hesse. It lies on the Main River and was of great importance during the Carolingian period. The town is located in the eastern part of the district, about 25 km southeast of Frankfurt am Main. The river forms the border with Lower Franconia in Bavaria.Around 100 AD, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Trajan, a cohort fort, the Castrum Selgum, was built on the site of today's Seligenstadt market square and parts of today's old town. The cohort stationed there was responsible for the security of the Limes section (also known as the Upper Germanic Limes) along the Main River. With the fall of the Limes during the Alemanni raids around 260 AD, the fort was abandoned, and the Romans withdrew behind the Rhine line. On the ruins of the former fort and on the present-day monastery grounds, the early medieval settlement of "Mulinheim superior," or Obermühlheim, arose in the valley of the Breitenbach. The oldest known written mention of Seligenstadt, then known as Obermühlheim, dates back to the donation made by Ludwig I to Einhard in Michelstadt and, according to a copy of the deed of donation, dated January 11, 815.
According to legend, the town was renamed not because of the burial of the relics of St. Peter and St. Marcelinus, but because Charlemagne's advisor and biographer had fled in love with his daughter Emma. He lived with her in Obermulinheim. One day, the emperor was passing through the town and entered the inn where his daughter Emma was now working. She served him pancakes, and the emperor recognized their incomparable taste. This is said to have given rise to the famous saying "Blessed be the city, for I have found my daughter Emma again," which can still be found today on the bay window of the so-called Einhardhaus (renovated in 1596) in Seligenstadt. As a result, the city was called blessed, and the name Seligenstadt was born.de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seligenstadt
