The demand for lime to improve the agricultural productivity of farm land increased substantially in the 18th and 19th centuries. In areas where limestone was available, local lime industries emerged, with field kilns producing lime for the surrounding area within a radius of a few cart journeys. In Northumberland, a coastal lime trade also developed, with ships transporting burnt lime to a variety of destinations from larger clusters of kilns located in convenient ports. The arrival of the railways led to the closure of many of the earlier kilns, as it became more cost-effective to produce lime at large commercial facilities that could supply entire regions.
