The Geuzengesticht Wilhelmus van Nassauen was established in 1872-73 in an existing house. It was a gift from the reformed population of Brielle on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the liberation of Den Briel. The national monument De Nymph, which was erected on Asylplein following the same event, was rejected by them because they considered it too offensive.
