Starting from the ferry terminal it is a mix of road and riding on the seawall. Once here, this segment is a complete ride around most of the island on the seawall. Only an occasional car, except a few cracks a good road surface and no chance to get lost ... just follow the road.
But bring drink and food, there is no opportunity for refilling. Shops are only available at the ferry terminal.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to get to Hengsha Island for cycling?

Access to Hengsha Island typically involves taking public transport from downtown Shanghai to Changxing Island, which takes about an hour by car. From Changxing Island, you'll then take a short ferry ride to Hengsha Island. The cycling route starts conveniently near the ferry terminal.

Are there any advanced cycling trails or more challenging routes near Hengsha Island?

The 'Around Hengsha Island' cycleway is primarily known for its flat and easy terrain, making it suitable for various skill levels, including beginners. While the island itself doesn't offer advanced, hilly trails, cyclists looking for more challenging routes might consider exploring the larger Chongming Island nearby, which offers a wider variety of cycling experiences.

What kind of natural features and wildlife can cyclists expect to see along the route?

Cyclists can enjoy lush vegetation with an estimated 70% tree coverage, abundant orchards, and diverse wildlife. Keep an eye out for water buffaloes in the wetlands and various bird species. The island is celebrated for its clean air and water, offering a refreshing natural environment.

Are there any cafes, pubs, or accommodation options directly along the Hengsha Island cycleway?

According to visitor tips, opportunities for refilling drinks and food are limited once you're on the cycling route. Shops and amenities are primarily available only at the ferry terminal. It's strongly recommended that cyclists bring their own provisions for the ride. Accommodation options are also concentrated near the ferry or in local villages, rather than directly along the seawall path.

Is the Hengsha Island cycleway suitable for families with young children or beginners?

Yes, the 'Around Hengsha Island' cycleway is very family-friendly and ideal for beginners. Its generally flat and easy terrain, combined with minimal car traffic on many sections, makes it a safe and enjoyable experience for cyclists of all ages and skill levels. The smooth road surface and clear path also contribute to its accessibility.

What is the typical duration for completing the 'Around Hengsha Island' cycling route?

The total riding distance for a full loop around Hengsha Island can range from approximately 30 kilometers to up to 57 kilometers, depending on the specific path chosen (seawall vs. inland roads). Given the flat terrain, a leisurely ride of 30 kilometers might take a few hours, while a longer 57-kilometer loop could easily fill half a day or more, allowing time for stops and exploration.

Are there any specific viewpoints or hidden gems to look out for along the cycling route?

While the entire route offers picturesque rural scenery, cyclists can discover hidden gems like orchards where seasonal fruit picking might be possible, and charming local villages adorned with flowers and vegetable gardens. It's generally advisable to keep dogs on a leash and be mindful of other cyclists and local wildlife. How does cycling 'Around Hengsha Island' compare to cycling on Chongming Island?

Hengsha Island offers a more tranquil, smaller-scale, and generally flatter cycling experience, ideal for a peaceful day trip with minimal traffic. Chongming Island, being much larger, provides a wider array of routes, potentially more varied terrain, and a greater selection of amenities and attractions. Hengsha is often preferred for its serene, eco-friendly, and less developed charm, while Chongming offers more extensive cycling networks and facilities.

What should cyclists wear when visiting Hengsha Island during the winter months?

During winter, Hengsha Island can be quite chilly, especially due to its coastal location and potential for wind. Cyclists should dress in layers, including a windproof and waterproof outer shell. Warm base layers, gloves, a hat or ear covering, and warm socks are essential to stay comfortable. The flat terrain means you won't generate as much body heat from climbing, so extra insulation is recommended.
