The main urban nucleus was founded in 1771 by the British with the name of Georgetown in honor of King George III of England during the period in which Menorca was under British rule and as reflected in the shield, in which Saint George appears killing the dragon. When the island was recovered by Spain in 1782, it changed its name to Real Villa de San Carlos in honor of King Carlos III, later shortened to Villacarlos. Due to its geographical location, it is the first town in Spain to see the sun rise.
