There are around 40 bunkers from the Second World War in the Zeepeduinen and Slot Haamstede. The command post is located on the high dune: the Vleugelbunker.

Partly Atlantic Wall
The Vleugelbunker and the associated other bunkers were part of the Atlantic Wall, the over 2500 km long German coastal defense line. The Atlantic Wall also left its mark on Schouwen. In order to defend the coast and the Haamstede airfield against an Allied invasion, the Germans set up the Schouwen base group here. An extensive complex of dozens of bunkers built in the dunes of Schouwen and in the slotbos of Haamstede Castle. Almost all bunkers correspond to the standard models that can be found throughout the Atlantic Wall. There is also plenty of accommodation for the crew and a hospital bunker, among other things.
