Mount Disappointment stands at 5,963 feet above sea level. The summit was actually flattened in the 1950s to accommodate a Nike missile site, which was decommissioned in 1965. There are currently multiple telecommunications towers at the summit, which are still in use. Mount Disappointment got its name in 1894 when USGS surveyors sighted it and thought it was highest peak in the area. When they reached the summit, however, they discovered that the neighboring peak, San Gabriel Peak was about 170 feet higher, and were disappointed. Despite the 19th century surveyor's disappointment, this peak is a great destination and offers fantastic views of the San Gabriel Mountains front range.
