The Goa Gajah Elephant Cave is one of the most important sights and sanctuaries in Bali. Non-Hindu visitors are more fascinated by the terrifying cave entrance than the small, plain grotto itself.
The entrance to the cave is formed by the wide open mouth of a stone demon visage with spherical eyes. This is probably the earth god Kala Boma, whose face is the gateway to the most sacred area in many Balinese temples. The passage through Boma's throat symbolizes death and the subsequent purification. A symbolic act to be able to step clean before the gods.
