Kartause Grünau Monastery Ruins and Guesthouse

First mentioned around 1281, the founding of the Carthusian monastery in Grünau,
back to Elisabeth von Hohenlohe, the daughter of Count Popo IV von Wertheim.
On March 15, 1328, Elisabeth von Hohenlohe issued the deed of foundation.
According to legend, the monastery was built on the spot
where the later founder had killed her husband while hunting.
The monastery was plundered during the Peasants' War of 1524/1525. In 1545 the monks had to give way.
In 1629, Emperor Ferdinand II restored the Grünau Charterhouse to its former condition.
During the Thirty Years' War in 1631, it was plundered and destroyed by the Swedes. away
The monastery was rebuilt in 1635, but it never experienced its former heyday.
It was orphaned and decayed. With the secularization of 1802/1803, the monastery came into the possession of the counts.
and later Princes of Löwenstein - Wertheim - Freudenberg.
From the heyday of the monastery there are only ruins left, the archway, parts of the church and the enclosing walls.
Today's residential and inn dates back to the 17th century and was probably a procurate in the past.
The pointed arch portal at the entrance to the Grünau Charterhouse bears the year 1507.
