Hiking
The original church is said to have been founded as early as 1204 by Saint Francis of Assisi, who landed on the island after a shipwreck. Its name is presumably derived from his hometown, Assisi.
The building was enlarged in 1860, but was completely destroyed by the devastating earthquake of 1953. The current structure, recognizable by its bright yellow facade and five distinctive arches, was completed in 1957 with the support of the Greek army.
