Best Hikes to Teufelsschlucht (Devil's Canyon) – Kitzlochklamm

Tips

  • We visited the gorge on a guided tour. The special thing about it: It was a super exciting and unforgettable torchlight hike. It started at dusk: Equipped with torches, the team had come up with some nice stations. Time and again there were musicians in different places who played some suitable songs for our group. The stalactite cave was opened for us (can now only be visited with a guide, as it was closed with an iron grille due to previous vandalism). At a cave entrance we got a stew to try, in the hermitage a little surprise awaits the visitors. All in all a great tour, the price-performance ratio is totally right.

  • The Kitzlochklamm is one and a half kilometers long. The Rauriser Ache has carved vertical walls here in thousands of years of work. The footbridges and tunnels have been used by many generations and some date from the 16th century.
Immediately after entering the gorge you come to a stalactite cave, which you can only visit with a guide. But not only in the rock, some also feel comfortable on the rock. The via ferrata in the Kitzlochklamm is one of the most demanding in the whole country.
Without a rope, you climb 385 steps, past the narrowest part of the gorge - the actual Kitzloch. It takes its name from the little goats who like to cool off and hide here in the summer.
Those looking for peace and quiet will find an extraordinary place in the gorge - a small hermitage. A hermit actually lived there until the beginning of the 20th century. His washroom also bears witness to this.

At the end of the Kitzlochklamm it will be spectacular again. The so-called Devil's Bridge is the end of the half-hour hike, from here you continue towards Rauris or you hike back to Taxenbach.

  • The Kitzloch Gorge is certainly one of the most beautiful and impressive gorges in our Alpine region. The unique natural spectacle with numerous idyllic bays, towering rugged rock faces, an impressive hermitage and the spectacular bridge make the gorge a special kind of excursion for the whole family.
The Rauriser Ache shoots through the narrow rocky slopes with unrestrained force. The crystal clear water rushes one last time between the shimmering limestone slate before it pours into the Salzach Valley. The Taxenbacher Kitzlochklamm is one of the most beautiful gorges in the Austrian Alps, located in the middle of the Salzburg region. For many thousands of years, rain and meltwater created an impressive natural spectacle on the edge of the Hohe Tauern National Park, the largest protected area in Central Europe. Idyllic bays and rugged, meter-high rock walls cast a spell over nature lovers from May to October. Between mossy stones, the rays of the sun dance like little elves in the glittering water dust. Bridges and tunnels from the 16th century open up the gorge for hikers and walkers, who can admire the natural beauties on their tour to the idyllic hermitage. A spectacular bridge high above the roaring water promises thrills for the whole family. The hike continues to the Maria Elend pilgrimage church in Embach. On guided tours, visitors learn many details about how it was formed and discover other treasures of the wild and romantic gorge such as the Ritz tunnel.
