Infantryman Deifl - recorded his experiences in the Napoleonic Wars in his diary.
Josef Deifl, born in Essing in 1790, survived the Napoleonic Wars as a private. He recorded his experiences in his diary. The written testimonies of non-commissioned officers and enlisted men from these times are very rare. Deifl managed to place his personal experiences in the context of the big events.
These horrible times are impressively portrayed in these records. Josef Deifl is thus one of the first war correspondents. According to him, he taught himself to read and write. This resulted in a special "Essingerisch" after Josef Deifl. "Writing is not art - I only need it to read" is his motto. Major state upheavals, the struggle for new worldviews caused by the French Revolution, against old, partly outdated traditions, the rise of Napoleon and his rapid fall, never-ending wars, economic problems, this is the environment in which Deifl lived.

The people longed for peace. This was also the greatest wish of the simple infantryman Josef Deifl, which he expressed in his diary.

His quote "everything that is written here is in favor of eternal peace" should also apply as a current admonition for our time. The memories that Deifl left behind are still relevant, that at some point humanity will find peace on earth.

Essing is definitely worth a visit again and again. No matter whether you stroll through the old town center, climb up to Randeck Castle or hike over the Tatzelwurm to the Klausen caves, it is always beautiful here.
