Today we are used to storing drinks and dishes in the refrigerator.
This was not possible without electricity. The seaside resort of St. Peter only received electricity in 1928. So the hotels had to do something different to keep the wine and beer cold for their guests in the summer. To achieve this, they built ice cellars, i.e. caves in the earth (usually in the dunes), where they stored ice bars on reeds in the winter, covered them properly and kept the cave closed to keep the cold in until late in the summer.
Sturgeon meat was also stored here between 1890 and 1930.
The ice cellar is elaborately built and also serves as a general storage room.chronik-spo.de/geschichte-insel/eiskeller
