Albury Park is an historic, scenic and well-maintained country park. The Park surrounds a fine Grade-II listed country house called Albury Park Mansion.
Albury Park has a long and interesting history. It was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and its Saxon church of St Peter and St Paul – open to the public – predates the Norman conquest of 1066. Albury Park was the site of the coronation banquet of King George III in 1761. The village of Albury used to lie within Albury Park but was relocated three-quarters of a mile (1 km) to the west in the 19th century. More recently, the Park and Mansion have been used as a set for TV and film, most notably for the film ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ and for the British TV series ‘Midsomer Murders’.
Albury Park has a beautiful and peaceful setting. The parkland grounds slope down to the delightful River Tillingbourne and contain large specimen trees set amid grassland that is part-maintained by a sizeable flock of sheep. There are pleasant rolling-hill mixed woods that contain abundant rhododendrons and azaleas, and there are scenic views of the North Downs. It is rewarding to examine the historic Saxon church, to glimpse the impressive Albury Park Mansion, and to admire the Park’s green and unspoilt countryside.
