The path from the Eisenhammer leads here into the Salzstraße. In the pre-Reformation period it was the only route across the mountains to Bohemia.
The believing carters and traders, who had laboriously overcome the steep path out of the valley, thanked the Lord at this point by praying in front of a shrine to Mary or a crucifix, i.e. in front of a wayside shrine."
