      Kernstockhaus Memorial Courtyard

The memorial courtyard in Gampern is dedicated to the Styrian priest poet and author of the national anthem of the 1st Austrian Republic, Ottokar Kernstock. In addition, the collection gives an insight into the everyday life of people 400 years ago.
The old Bavarian smoke kitchen house (side hall house) built in "squared timber block construction" is the extension house of the "Kapeller" court in Pöring, which was documented around 1400. It got its current appearance in 1605, today it is a listed building. The furnishings, which were carried out with the utmost professional care, mostly date from the 17th century. The furniture collection represents objects from the 15th to 17th centuries.
In addition to the exhibition on the Styrian poet Ottokar Kernstock, a no less extensive collection of tools and equipment forms additional focal points. A hand-carved cider press and a Göpel can be seen as further evidence of rural culture.

Ottokar Kernstock was born in 1848 in Marburg an der Drau in Lower Styria. He was an Austrian poet, priest and Augustinian canon. From 1875 he published historical and literary works. From 1878 his poems appeared in the Munich magazine "Flying Leaves". After he took office as a pastor in Festenburg in 1889, he began to write poetry in the tradition of the late Romantic period with German national content. In 1919 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Graz. He died in 1928 at Festenburg Castle in Styria.

Kernstock wrote the Kaiserlied and the national anthem introduced in 1929/30.
