Fountain of Justice + German Goldsmiths' House 🚴♂️The German Goldsmiths' House (formerly the Old Town Hall) is the former town hall of Hanau's Old Town, which has been used as a museum since the 19th century. The German Goldsmiths' House was built as a half-timbered structure on the long side of the Old Town Market Square between two stone gable walls and on a stone base. It dates from the Late Gothic and Early Renaissance periods and is dated to 1538 by an inscription. Its functional predecessor, the town hall, dates from the 15th century and stood on the opposite side of the market square.
After the city administrations of Hanau's Old Town and New Town were merged in the third decade of the 19th century, the building became obsolete as a town hall. From the end of the 19th century until the Second World War, it served as a museum of the Hanau Historical Society. During the air raids on Hanau in March 1945, the building burned down to its foundations and both gable walls. The half-timbered structure visible today is a reconstruction from 1955–1958.
Current use: Hanau also calls itself a city of fine jewelry, boasts a tradition of goldsmithing dating back to the beginning of the 17th century, and is home to the State Drawing Academy, a leading institution for the training of goldsmiths, as well as the headquarters of the German Society for Goldsmithing. On October 18, 1942, the German Goldsmiths' House was founded and located in the building. The museum of the Hanau Historical Society, which was then located there, was relocated to the City Palace. Today, the German Goldsmiths' House hosts changing exhibitions, particularly jewelry presentations.- Fountain of Justice
The sandstone fountain in front of the town hall is an important work of Renaissance stonemasonry. It was commissioned in 1607/1608 by the Hanau Old Town Council and created by the Büdingen sculptor Johannes Rab. The fountain is crowned by Lady Justice with scales and sword. The two lions on the left and right hold shields bearing the coats of arms of Hanau Old Town and the Counts of Hanau-Münzenberg. The fountain's structure was originally decorated with color.de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsches_Goldschmiedehaus
