On this hill (135m) which dominates the Scarpe valley, Saint Eloi founded an abbey in the 7th century. The army of Louis XI set up camp there in the 15th century during the siege of Arras, as did the Prince of Condé against Turenne two centuries later. The damaged abbey was rebuilt in the 18th century by Augustinians. But the revolution sold the walls as national property and during the world wars (particularly in 1915 and 1940) the building was almost completely destroyed. Only the two impressive towers (53m) remain.
